An external expert review meeting regarding the installation plan for the 2,200-ton gantry crane at Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding was recently held at the CSSC Ninth Design & Research Institute (CSSC NDRI). Experts and representatives in attendance heard a detailed presentation by Nantong Zhenhua Heavy Equipment on the “Shanghai Waigaoqiao 2,200-Ton Gantry Crane Installation Plan.” After carefully reviewing the relevant documentation and engaging in inquiries and discussion, the expert panel unanimously concluded that the plan was feasible and approved it.
The 2,200-ton gantry crane at Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding—manufactured by Nantong Zhenhua Heavy Equipment for the No. 2 dry dock of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.—is a single-girder gantry crane featuring core technical specifications that rank at the forefront of the industry.
With a rail span of 155 meters and a travel distance of approximately 780 meters, the crane boasts a lifting capacity of 2,200 tons and a turning capacity of 1,100 tons. It effectively addresses the challenges associated with the block construction of large vessels and enhances operational efficiency.
Construction on the project began on March 31, 2026, with CSSC NDRI serving as the EPC general contractor; the winning bid was valued at RMB 169.9 million.
Notably, this gantry crane boasts the highest lifting capacity of any such crane built by Nantong Zhenhua Heavy Equipment and represents the largest-capacity gantry crane project in the history of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). Once operational, the crane will significantly enhance efficiency and capabilities regarding the lifting of large ship sections and the integration of mega-blocks, thereby meeting the construction requirements for high-end vessels such as ultra-large oil tankers and large container ships.
