A Cadeler vessel has been involved in a collision with another ship at a UK port, bringing down a gantry crane.
The incident involving the Danish company’s Wind Orca jack-up installation vessel for offshore wind occurred on Sunday at the port of Tyne in northeast England.
A Port of Tyne spokesperson said that “the vessel Wind Orca was leaving dock when it was in collision with the berthed container ship BG Orange.”
“Subsequently, a gantry crane on the Port’s quayside sustained significant damage,” they said, and one person was taken to hospital.
“A full investigation has begun, and we will cooperate fully with the authorities.”
A Cadeler spokesperson said that Wind Orca was involved in an “allision” (a maritime term for ship striking a stationary object) with a “third party vessel and shoreside crane” yesterday.
“The crane operator was injured and has been taken to hospital where he is reported to be in a stable condition and receiving treatment,” said the spokesperson.
“All crew on the Wind Orca are safe and there are no reports of any pollution.”
They added that Cadeler has activated its Emergency Response Procedure and is “working closely with all relevant authorities and other stakeholders to manage the situation safely and efficiently.”
Wind Orca has been working on installation of Danish developer Orsted’s Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm in the UK North Sea. Cadeler reported in May that the vessel had completed installation of the first fully commissioned monopile foundation.
That was the first of 197 monopile foundations Cadeler will transport and install as part of the company’s full transportation and installation scope for the project.
An Orsted spokesperson confirmed they are aware of the incident involving a “contractor vessel” and that their “immediate priority is for the welfare of everyone involved and to understand exactly what has happened.”
“We are working closely with the contractor, the Port of Tyne and other parties to establish the facts.”
A Northumbria Police spokesperson is quoted in the BBC and other media outlets saying that “emergency services attended and a man was found to have sustained injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
“He was taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains. Enquiries remain ongoing to fully understand the circumstances.”
