According to China’s state-run broadcaster CCTV News, China’s shipbuilding and offshore engineering industries have shown strong momentum this year, with a series of high-end vessels and equipment being delivered, and a world-class industrial cluster in the sector is rapidly taking shape.

In recent days, China’s shipbuilding industry has been reporting a string of successes. A 319,000 DWT ammonia-ready very large crude carrier (VLCC) has been delivered, capable of near-zero-carbon operation throughout its entire service life; China’s largest 180,000 m³ LNG carrier has been successfully completed; and the world’s largest piling vessel has been delivered, providing equipment support for large cross-sea bridges and deep-sea engineering projects.
With the goal of developing world-leading marine and offshore engineering products, China is accelerating the development of world-class industrial clusters in this sector. The Yangtze River Delta is striving to become a global hub for high-end marine and offshore equipment; the Bohai Rim region is establishing a complete industrial chain spanning from the R&D of green marine engines to the manufacturing of green vessels; and the Pearl River Delta is focusing on the development of offshore engineering equipment, promoting the coordinated development of industries such as offshore oil and gas exploration and offshore wind power support systems.

The development of a world-class shipbuilding and offshore engineering industry cluster has led to improved shipbuilding efficiency and a growing share of high-end vessel types, while also attracting an increasing number of global partners.
The Chinese government’s planning outline explicitly states that efforts should be made to strengthen and improve the base for high-end ships and offshore engineering equipment.
This year, China will advance the research, development, design, and manufacturing of large cruise ships, large liquefied natural gas carriers, and other vessels, thereby consolidating and enhancing its competitive edge in the marine equipment manufacturing sector.
This year, China’s shipbuilding completions are expected to exceed 60 million deadweight tons, maintaining its global leadership.
