On December 21, the first X72DF-A ammonia-fueled low-speed engine developed by CSSC Engine Co.,Ltd. (CSE), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), successfully achieved full-load stable operation in ammonia fuel mode at its Qingdao headquarters. This marks China’s first achievement under all operating conditions in ammonia fuel mode on a marine low-speed engine.

This successful full-condition stable operation verified the integrity and effectiveness of CSE’s newly built large-diameter dual-fuel test bench, auxiliary systems, liquid ammonia station, ammonia fuel supply unit, and other facilities, as well as its capabilities in main engine assembly quality, commissioning process and safety management. It signifies that the company has the capability for full-load testing of ammonia fuel main engines.
It is understood that the successful full-load operation of this ammonia fuel mode demonstrates CSE’s technological breakthrough in zero-carbon fuel engine manufacturing, filling the gap in China’s ammonia fuel engine full-condition operation.
This significant advancement injects strong momentum into building a diversified global clean marine power solution. CSE will also take this as a starting point to continue its deep involvement in the manufacturing and service of zero-carbon fuel power for vessels, strengthen technological innovation and application, and contribute the wisdom and strength of CSSC Engine to the implementation of my country’s “dual-carbon” strategy and the accelerated cultivation of new-type productivity in marine power.
