On June 24, Mawei Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Fujian Shipbuilding Industry Group, signed an order with Seacon Shipping Group for one 406TEU teaching electric container ships, with an option for an additional vessel of the same type.
The 406TEU teaching electric container ship combines functions such as transportation, teaching practice, and scientific research, representing the high-end level of China’s electric ship construction.
Equipped with 7 sets of 1999KWH large-capacity battery modules, the vessel is electrically driven and equipped with an advanced three-electric system and multi-functional power mode switching. The EEDI energy efficiency index is far lower than the 2025 third-phase standard, achieving energy conservation and environmental protection under multiple working conditions and minimizing the carbon footprint of navigation.
The vessel is 104 meters long, 18.80 meters wide, 8.80 meters deep and has a designed draft of 5.50 meters. It is equipped with academic lecture halls, reading rooms, conference rooms and other special teaching areas. The conference rooms and classrooms are equipped with smart office screens, audio equipment, CCTV systems, remote teaching systems and other teaching equipment, which can meet the needs of 48 teachers and students to participate in teaching internships at the same time.
At the same time, it is equipped with cutting-edge scientific research equipment such as land, sea, air and space communication systems, marine observatories, and digital twin ship management training systems, and has reserved a wealth of interfaces and space to meet future scientific research needs.
The vessel combines coastal container transport capabilities (deadweight tonnage of 6,200 tons) with a service speed of approximately 10 knots. Classed by CCS, it is equipped with comprehensive living and medical facilities (medical room, ward, dining room, gym, etc.) to meet the needs of long-distance voyages.
It is understood that this project is a powerful measure for Fujian Shipbuilding Industry Group to promote the development of the electric ship industry and fulfill the responsibilities of a state-owned enterprise. Fujian Shipbuilding will take this signing as a new starting point, continue to deepen its research on green ship technology, and contribute the solid Fujian strength and shipbuilding wisdom to China’s transition from a shipping power to a shipping powerhouse.
