China’s first ammonia-powered real ship project commenced in Dalian COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry

On January 16, the first domestic ammonia/diesel dual-fuel-powered 5500HP azimuth-stern drive (ASD) tug undertaken by Dalian COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry started construction, which marks that COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry’s “R&D and Demonstration Application of Ammonia-powered Dual-fuel Engine and Supply System” has entered into the construction stage of the real ship.

The mmonia/diesel dual-fuel powered 5500HP ASD tug has a length of 38 meters, a width of 11 meters, a depth of 4.8 meters and a design draft of 3.7 meters. It is equipped with two C-type liquid ammonia storage tanks, 12V240HDFA ammonia-diesel dual-fuel engine developed by Dalian CRRC Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. and FASS-L-20 ammonia fuel supply system of COSCO SHIPPING HEAVY INDUSTRY Technology (WEIHAI) Co., Ltd. , as well as the exhaust gas treatment device developed by Nantong Ocean Ship Equipment Co., Ltd., which can meet the requirements of National Anti-pollution Standard (CII) after de-mineralization and de-ammoniaization of vessel emissions.

It is understood that the ““R&D and Demonstration Application of Ammonia-powered Dual-fuel Engine and Supply System” project was formally launched in early 2022, aims to further research the application of new energy and new fuel in the shipping system, especially the application of zero-carbon fuel.

Ammonia-fueled vessel and ammonia supply system designs were awarded approvals in principle (AiPs) from classification society ABS as well as CCS.
