Recently, Austal Vietnam, a shipyard in Vietnam owned by the Australian shipbuilding group Austal, officially delivered the ro-pax vessel “Dory 2” to the Degage Group of French Polynesia. This marks the first steel-aluminum hybrid vessel built and delivered by the shipyard.

Designed by Austal, the “Dory 2” began construction in 2024 and was launched in March 2026. This vessel is the seventh new vessel Austal has delivered to the Degage Group; the previous vessel delivered as part of their collaboration was the 66-meter “Apetahi Express” in 2023.
The “Dory 2” is equipped with a 494-square-meter cargo deck capable of carrying containers, vehicles, and palletized cargo, with a total deadweight capacity of 1,400 tonnes.
Austal Vietnam stated that the company will continue to enhance the technical capabilities of its shipbuilding base in Vietnam to support the development of the country’s shipbuilding industry.
According to reports, Austal Vietnam is a wholly-owned overseas shipyard of Austal, primarily responsible for building the group’s commercial vessel orders, while defense shipbuilding projects are handled by Austal’s shipyards in Australia and the United States. The shipyard officially began operations in 2018 and serves as a core shipbuilding base for Austal to optimize its production capacity layout and reduce commercial vessel costs.
