On November 18, 2025, China State Shipbuilding Corporation’s Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding partnered with Tianjin Southwest Maritime, Lloyd’s Register, and other relevant entities to hold the keel-laying ceremony for China’s first 41,000m³ dual-fuel ammonia LPG/liquid ammonia carrier.

As China’s first domestically built 41,000m³ ammonia dual-fuel powered transport vessel, it adopts internationally advanced ammonia dual-fuel main engines and ammonia fuel supply systems, enabling flexible adaptation to future green ammonia fuel supply chains. Simultaneously, it strictly complies with IMO Tier III emission standards and EEDI Phase III energy efficiency requirements, achieving world-leading environmental performance. This marks a major achievement by Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding in responding to global “dual carbon” goals and advancing new energy ship technology.
The vessel has an overall length of 179.9 meters, a beam of 30 meters, and a depth of 18.85 meters. Its primary dimensions are designed to balance navigational stability with port adaptability. Equipped with three IMO Type A independent liquid cargo tanks and two deck tanks, the total cargo capacity reaches 41,000 m³ with a design temperature as low as -50°C. The vessel can simultaneously carry both LPG and liquid ammonia, enabling multi-purpose operations. Featuring the latest low-resistance hull design, coupled with high-efficiency shaft generators and energy-saving coating technology, it balances environmental benefits with operational economy.

The successful commencement of construction of this vessel marks another highlight of the friendly cooperation between Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding and Southwest Maritime. It is also a significant leap forward for China’s shipbuilding industry in the application of new energy power, and a key practice in promoting the shipping industry’s transition to zero carbon, providing a highly competitive Chinese solution for the industry’s green development.
Huangpu Wenchong will continue to leverage its technological expertise and innovative advantages in the field of small and medium-sized gas carriers, and continue to focus on the research and development and manufacturing of new energy vessels such as ammonia fuel, LNG, and methanol. Working hand in hand with customers, Huangpu Wenchong will empower green transformation with technological breakthroughs and build synergy for development through long-term cooperation, injecting stronger momentum into the high-quality and low-carbon development of the shipping industry and jointly writing a new chapter in green shipping.
