Samsung Heavy Industries Begins Construction of First LNG Carrier for Shandong-QatarEnergy Joint Project

Recently, Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje Shipyard kicked off construction of the first 174,000 cbm LNG carrier for the joint project between Shandong Marine Energy and QatarEnergy.

In 2024, Shandong Marine Energy successfully won the bid for QatarEnergy’s long-term time charter program for 9 LNG carriers. This vessel is the first LNG carrier to be built by Samsung Heavy Industries for the QatarEnergy Shipping Expansion Project.

The project is an important layout of Shandong Marine Energy in the field of global LNG newbuilding, and an important witness of cooperation with QatarEnergy, Samsung Heavy Industries and other international head enterprises and an important symbol of deep participation in the global clean energy transportation system.

The LNG carrier under construction is designed to be 299 meters in length, 46.4 meters in width and 26.25 meters in depth. The vessel has a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic meters and is equipped with an advanced Mark III Flex membrane cargo containment system and a dual-fuel propulsion system. It integrates a number of the latest energy-saving and emission-reduction technologies, which can effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Its comprehensive economic performance indicators have reached international advanced levels.

In the next step, Shandong Marine Energy will push forward the construction of the vessel with high standards, ensure the high quality delivery of the project, and contribute Shandong Ocean Energy’s power to the global energy and low-carbon transformation.
